Tasty Treats for the Beach

A day at the beach would not be quite the same without a tasty lunch. Whether you’re heading to a beach in Harwich Port or farther down Cape to the National Seashore in Orleans, Eastham, Truro or Provincetown, there’s a unique sandwich shop nearby that will make your sun-splashed day complete.

Here are our five favorites.

J. Bar, Harwich Port

Tucked away in the center of downtown Harwich Port, this cool vegan café and juice bar offers plant-based sandwiches made from unprocessed ingredients. You’ll find only healthy nutrition in the sandwiches, smoothies, acai and pitaya bowls. What you won’t find is processed sugar, gluten or dairy products. Pick up an Earth sandwich (shredded carrots and beets, fresh greens, sliced cucumbers, sesame tahini and Himalayan pink salt), wash it down with a South Pacific smoothie (banana, pineapple, mango and dried coconut shreds) and you’ll be feeling lean and energized as you relax on the sand.

The Mason Jar, Harwich Port

Select from an eclectic list of sandwiches, all made with Boar’s Head meats and cheeses. The Orchard sandwich features turkey, apple, Vermont cheddar and honey mustard, while the Honey Bee sandwich is a combination of Black Forest ham, brie, lettuce and honey mustard. Or perhaps go with the Mason Jar Veggie Classic, which has sliced cucumber, carrots, tomato, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing.

Viv’s Kitchen & Juice Bar, Orleans

Heading to Nauset Beach? This has become a popular spot to stop since it opened in 2017. Serving homemade food with a healthy kick, the husband-and-wife team of Mike and Viv specialize in dishes from Viv’s native Brazil. There are pulled-pork Cubano sandwiches and the Turkey Football (turkey, bacon, stuffing, cranberry mayo and provolone on a brioche) for the meat lovers, along with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. The X-Tudo sandwich is a favorite of many, made with garlic chicken, ham, bacon, batata palha, mayo, lettuce, tomato and provolone. There is also a wide selection of smoothies and fresh juices.

Corner Store, Orleans

In the mood for Mexican? How about a savory grilled chicken burrito with black beans, rice, cheese, pico de gallo and guacamole? Another favorite is the chipotle-lime veggie burrito, made with black beans, refried beans, Jack cheese, rice, roasted corn salsa, pico de gallo, spinach, Asian slaw and lime, with chipotle aioli. There are also panini sandwiches, soups and even whoopie pies. Don’t leave without grabbing a cookie. The macadamia, white chocolate and sweet cranberry cookies are fabulous.

Basco Grill, Eastham

If you venture to the Outer Cape beaches, make a stop here, where fried chicken sandwiches with creative toppings like Cajun-spiced onion and bacon jam, cheddar cheese and basco sauce are the signature dish. They also offer unique burgers, such as the Pizza Burger (with homemade onion and bacon jam, cheddar cheese and horseradish mayo), the Hunter Burger (with sauteed mushrooms in garlic and truffle butter, Swiss cheese, Dijon mustard, lettuce and tomato) and the Black & Blue Burger (a Cajun-spiced burger, with blue cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and red onion).
