Great Year-Round Shopping on Cape Cod

It’s a new year, yet we’re still mired in pandemic-induced weirdness. With vaccines now being distributed, we have hope, and we really hope the upcoming summer season on the Cape is a great one. We’re of a glass-half-full frame of mind, so we’ve tried to find the good that has come out of what has undeniably been one of the most challenging times in history, and after-Christmas anecdotal info we’ve heard from friends who own small shops on Cape Cod has us feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

While actual figures have yet to be released, pre-holiday predictions forecast a huge increase in online shopping for the season of 2020, which isn’t surprising. What did take many local shopkeepers by very pleasant surprise was the amount of people who took “shop local” very much to heart this year.

With this in mind, we’ve created a something-for-everyone round-up of some of our favorite locally owned shops, all of which are open year round.

For Kids

The Red Balloon Toy Shop

We stopped at this iconic Cape Cod toy store in early December looking for a gift for a “very busy 18-month-old boy in the $25 range,” as we explained to the clerk. It took her about 20 seconds to make a decision and lead us toward the back of the well-stocked shop. She directed us toward a wooden toy with lots of slides and ramps. Given the nonstop action this toy was receiving during a Christmas Day FaceTime session with said busy boy’s parents, it was the hit of his holiday. The people at this shop – both the owners and employees – clearly know what kids want, and they have it at the ready.

Kid & Kaboodle

With exceptional apparel for infants, toddlers and children, and a whimsical selection of toys and costumes, this Orleans children’s shop is fun for both parents and kids. While mom shops for head-to-toe must-haves, the little ones can ogle fairy wings and masks, books and games, and cuddly stuffed toys. Of note for people who may not have children or grandchildren of their own, but will have children staying at their Cape house, is Kid & Kaboodle’s equipment rental program. It is a game-changer!

For Women (or Men Looking for Gifts for the Women They Love)

Forest Beach Designer Goldsmiths

The single item for which they’re probably most well known is their flip-flop charms. Available in both sterling and 14K gold, what makes them so special is that the flip-flops actually look well worn; subtle indents for each toe denote a summer’s worth of happy Cape Cod memories.

If the Shoe Fits

Fashionistas will absolutely love this clothing and shoe shop on Main Street in Chatham. Like Forest Beach, If the Shoe Fits’ price range is wide ranging. You can grab a swanky-looking yet inexpensive statement necklace that, should your statement-making mood pass, you won’t regret relegating to the back of the drawer. But you’ll also find high-end designer shoes, exquisite cashmere sweaters and on-trend apparel. What you won’t find is typical Cape Cod clothing; not a single pair of Nantucket Reds is to be found.

For Men

Devil’s Purse Brewing Co.

Sure, women like beer. But they’re far less likely than men to be obsessed with local micro brews. Since this beer-obsessed crew started their brewery in an inauspicious industrial park in 2015, their business has exploded. Their selection of beers is available in many local eateries and, in “normal” times, their way-cool tasting room is packed with suds-sipping hipsters. How did a small brewery become so popular so quickly? By crafting excellent beer. Right now, they’re offering curbside pickup only. Should the Intertidal Oyster Stout be available when you visit, put this creamy concoction at the top of your list.

Goose Hummock Shops

Outdoorsy types, of which there are many on Cape Cod, can’t seem to get enough of “The Goose,” as it’s known locally. Fishing gear is their forte. If there is a specialized rod available for finding a certain kind of fish, they’ve got it at The Goose. They are also one of the largest kayak dealerships on the Cape, with an entire second building devoted to paddle-powered watercrafts. High-performance outdoor apparel, and hunting, camping and fishing accessories, round out the offerings.
