Date-Night-Worthy Romantic Dinners

A casual meal can be fun, but a romantic dinner with your significant other? Now that’s a special occasion. You don’t have to travel far from the Seadar Inn in search of fine dining on Cape Cod. There are numerous “date night-worthy” spots where you can dress up a little, without the requirement of a jacket and tie, and enjoy a gourmet meal in an opulent setting.

Here are five of the best.

Cape Sea Grille, Harwich Port

Just down the road off Route 28 in Harwich Port and located in a 19th-century sea captain’s house steps from the water’s edge, you’ll dine amidst white linens, warm candlelight and fresh-cut flowers.

Chef and owner Douglas Ramler relies on fresh local ingredients to create an ever-changing menu that includes oven-roasted East Coast halibut with roasted cippolinis, watermelon radish & shaved fennel; Long Island duck with foie gras-goat cheese wontons, a salad of shredded Napa cabbage, roasted kohlrabi, snap peas & grilled pineapple; and herb-crusted rack of spring lamb with carrot-chive gnocchi, a sauté of roasted beets, caramelized onions & spinach, finished with minted mole jus & cilantro gremolata.

There are also 100 wines to choose from, including 20 by the glass.

Pates, Chatham

The brick-and-wood-walled dining room makes for a cozy and warm atmosphere. Settle into a quiet booth and select from a menu that takes advantage of a decades-long relationship with local farmers, fishermen and other local product providers.

Chef and owner Anthony Silvestri displays an exquisite touch with a wide variety of small plates. Among his specialties is Peking duck tacos, Kimchi lobster tacos and grilled artichoke hearts. Don’t miss the tuna cones, which come with a wasabi foam, scallions, soy and sesame.

For entrees, you can’t go wrong with either the surf and turf (grilled sirloin, lobster ravioli and truffle cream sauce) or the seafood pan roast (lobster, shrimp and scallops over fettuccini).

28 Atlantic, Harwich

The only Forbes five-star restaurant on the Cape, 28 Atlantic is the signature restaurant at the elegant Wequassett Resort and Golf Club. Housed in an 18th-century sea captain’s home, it overlooks Pleasant Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, providing perhaps the most spectacular view on the Cape.

The restaurant’s décor matches the view, with an exposed wine rack, a fireplace, rich wood paneling, period lighting fixtures, fine marine art and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The menu is equally unforgettable. You might begin your romantic evening with caviar, then proceed to the grilled octopus appetizer. For your entrée, the native lobster or the day boat scallops seem ideally suited for the setting and the occasion.

Chillingsworth, Brewster

There may be no more romantic restaurant that shouts out special occasion on Cape Cod. Housed on a 300-year-old estate and set among six acres of lawns and gardens, the interior is actually a maze of intimate, adjoining rooms, appointed with New England antiques and an atmosphere of luxury.

The dining room offers a seven-course set menu of French-inspired cuisine blended with New England, Californian and Asian influences. Think escargot or roasted stuffed quail for your starter, and seared loin of elk, roasted tenderloin beef tornedoes, seared veal loin or pan-seared halibut for your entrée. Complete the enchanting experience with raspberry souffle or the crème brûlée trio of mango, strawberry and passion fruit.

The Pheasant, Dennis

The most casual of the five choices, this family-owned restaurant is housed in a meticulously restored 200-year-old red barn, with wood floors and exposed beams giving it a rustic, yet sophisticated feel. The owners work closely with local farmers and fishermen to source the best seasonal ingredients to create dynamic, bold flavors and made-from-scratch menus.

Appetizers include ceviche, with local halibut, citrus, herbs and tropical fruits; crispy lobster onigiri, made with panko-crusted and fried Japanese rice balls, curried lobster and smoked pineapple red pepper aioli; and clams casino served with a buttermilk biscuit and a white clam sauce gravy.

Among the entrees are lemon olive oil poached halibut, with tabouli; seared, sliced duck breast served over cold noodles with ground pork, chili crunch peanuts and Szechuan peppercorns; and a 16-ounce, grass-fed New York strip steak, with potato salad and roasted garlic salsa.
