fall on cape cod

For some folks, fall on Cape Cod is their favorite time of year. The weather is crisp and cool, and perhaps best of all, the kids have returned to school. And that means the time has finally come for the adults to have some fun.

The Cape is a great spot to rekindle your relationship with romantic times together as a couple. You know, how it used to be before the little ones arrived. So, if you’re on Cape for a getaway, we have plenty of suggestions for how to spend the time.

Fall is the perfect season to play golf. The rates are lower, the tees times are more readily available, and the cooler weather won’t make you feel like a wet dishrag when you walk off the 18th green.

Cranberry Valley in Harwich has long been considered one of the Cape’s premier public courses. Winding its way through cranberry bogs, it is scenic and challenging. The final three holes, which are a long and demanding par-4, an uphill par-3 and a double dogleg par-5, might constitute the finest finishing stretch on Cape.

For a more casual round, check out Harwich Port Golf Course. The wedding-white clubhouse has stood since the club opened in 1920. With only nine holes, the fairways are wide and flat, and there isn’t a single sand bunker on the entire layout.

In the mood for museums? The Edward Gorey House in Yarmouthport is where the famous illustrator of such macabre tales as “The Gashlycrumb Tinies” lived during the final years of his life. Gorey’s work, in all its ironic eccentricity, is on display at the 200-year-old sea captain’s home that sits just off Old King’s Highway.

Gorey purchased the house on the Cape in 1986 and spent the last 14 years of his life working in a cozy second-floor studio, using pen and ink to meticulously draw images that required both patience and a certain amount of obsession. More than 25,000 books are scattered around the house, sharing space with assorted collections of beach stones, glasswork, art, jewelry, and Tibetan rings and amulets. Many of the artifacts and other personal effects are on display at the museum. Visitors can even tour Gorey’s kitchen, which is just as he left it.

Cape Cod Rail Trail

If you’re seeking couple’s time along with exercise, hop on a bike and explore the Cape Cod Rail Trail, which runs through six towns, including Harwich. After working off some pounds, quench your thirst with a trail of another kind that features adult beverages. Devil’s Purse Brewing Co. in South Dennis features a rotating list of creative craft beers and a cozy tasting room. Hog Island Beer Company in Orleans also has food, wine, a patio and live music. Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis is open six days a week for year-round tastings and tours.

The Cape is also home to a number of wineries. First Crush Winery in Harwich produces 55,000 bottles annually and has tours and tastings. Truro Vineyards & South Hollow Spirits, in Truro, includes wines and bourbons, along with a cocktail bar.

No getaway would be complete without a romantic dinner. At 28 Atlantic, located on the grounds of the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club, you’ll dine in an upscale setting that features eye-popping ocean views from every table. Less pricy, but with an equally spectacular setting, is The Ocean House in Dennis Port. Another romantic spot is Buca’s Tuscan Roadhouse in Harwich. Settle into a table tucked in an alcove at the intimate brick-walled restaurant and you’ll be transported to the hills of Tuscany.

After a weekend like this, you might want to send the kids off to boarding school so you can get away more often!
