Comfort Food on Cape Cod

When staying at the Seadar Inn, you won’t need to travel far to enjoy some comfort food while catching a sporting event and rubbing elbows with locals in a relaxed setting. There are numerous nearby pubs, where the atmosphere is casual and the conversation is usually lively, that feature mouth-watering burgers, savory chowders, crispy fries and, of course, plenty of seafood offerings.

Hot Stove Saloon

If you’re in search of the definitive sports pub, you won’t find a better one on Cape Cod than the Hot Stove Saloon on Route 28 in Harwich Port. Framed baseball memorabilia line the walls, and photos of the game’s legends dating back to 1904 are everywhere. There are also seven televisions, so you’ll have a great view no matter where you sit.

The chicken wings, tossed in garlic butter and fresh parsley, are a specialty. For something different, order a side of zucchini fries to go with your burger.

At the nearby Lanyard Bar and Grill, the emphasis is on making a connection with the community. Harwich natives Ben and Angela Porter, who also own Viera in West Harwich, offer an inventive and affordable menu.

Don’t miss the fried mac-and-cheese served with barbecue sauce, or the drunken mussels, which are doused in cilantro beer broth and chorizo. If you love genuine barbecue, you have to try the pulled pork, ribs and brisket, which are prepared in a custom-made hardwood smoker shipped from Alabama and are served with a selection of homemade sides and sauces.

The 400 East Restaurant & Bar, located at the junction of Route 39 and 137 in Harwich, is known for its fresh ground charbroiled burgers, grilled thin crust pizzas and creative daily specials. The cowboy burger, with barbecue sauce, smoked beef brisket, cheddar cheese and fried banana peppers is an unforgettably decadent experience.

A bit further afield is the Chatham Squire, a local landmark since 1968. The walls in the always-vibrant bar area are covered in vanity license plates from across the country. Businessmen and builders rub elbows in a casual setting of wide-plank wood floors and beamed ceilings. The menu features traditional New England seafood and pub fare at prices more reasonable than one might expect in an upscale town. The cioppino, made with local shellfish, is fabulous.

In Dennisport, the Cleat & Anchor serves some of the best craft beers on the Cape, with 20 draft lines and a rotating lineup of selections. There are also high-caliber cocktails, using mixes, syrups and purees that are all made in-house.

The ginger garlic swordfish and the cranberry balsamic scallops are among the favorite entrees, as is the unique chicken pot “pie,” which is a pizza made with a chicken pot pie base topped with mozzarella and provolone cheese, and crispy pastry cut strips.

Few pubs on the Cape are more frequented by locals than the iconic Land Ho! in Orleans. Signs from local businesses hang from every available space in the ceiling, and the charm and character are off the charts, thanks in large part to long-time owner John Murphy. Grab a seat at the long wooden bar, order a pint and a giant stuffed clam followed by the cheeseburger club sandwich. It doesn’t get much better.

If the Land Ho! has competition for top local hangout, it would be the funky and laidback Yardarm, also located in Orleans. Opened in 1971, the Yardarm is a popular stop for fishermen, physicians, tradesmen and tourists, who exchange stories, watch sports and choose from a reasonably priced menu that includes local seafood, chowders, soups and steaks. Here’s a tip: prime rib night is every Monday and Thursday.

At each of these destinations, the focus is on comfort and casual. Everyone might not know your name, but it won’t take long before you feel like they do.
